Hangzhou City, abbreviated as “Hang,” formerly known as Lin'an, Qiantang, and Wulin, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province, the provincial capital of Zhejiang Province, a sub-provincial city, a megacity, a central city in the Yangtze River Delta region, and a global fintech hub. It is located in the northern part of Zhejiang Province, downstream of the Qiantang River. The terrain of the city slopes gradually from west to east. The terrain is divided into low mountains and hills, river valleys and basins, and alluvial plains. It has a subtropical monsoon climate with distinct seasons, ample sunlight, abundant rainfall, short springs and autumns, and long winters and summers.
After the Qin Dynasty unified the six states, a county seat was established at the foot of Lingyin Mountain, named Qiantang. In 589, Qiantang Commandery was abolished, and Hangzhou was established, marking the first appearance of the name “Hangzhou” in history. In 1912, the former Qiantang and Renhe counties were merged to form Hangzhou County. In 1927, the urban area of Hangzhou County and other regions were designated as Hangzhou City. Excavations at the Kuahuqiao Site within Hangzhou City reveal that humans have inhabited the area for over 8,000 years. The Liangzhu Culture, dating back over 5,000 years, is referred to as the “dawn of Chinese civilization.” Hangzhou City is an important birthplace of Chinese civilization, renowned worldwide as the “Famous Prefecture of the Southeast.” It served as the capital of the Wu Yue Kingdom during the Five Dynasties period and the Southern Song Dynasty.
Hangzhou City is a key central city in eastern China, a national historical and cultural city, an international comprehensive transportation hub city, a national digital economy innovation center, a regional science and technology innovation hub, an advanced manufacturing base, an eastern modern service industry center, and an international tourist destination. Hangzhou is renowned for its scenic beauty and is often referred to as the “Paradise on Earth,” with its representative cultures including West Lake Culture, Qiantang River Culture, and Grand Canal Culture.
